Yoga Nidra is Sanskrit and means “yogic sleep”.

It is a relaxation exercise and a form of guided meditation performed while lying down.

What is
Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a systematic method for purposefully directing consciousness from the external world to the internal world. It involves achieving a state between sleep and wakefulness that enables complete deep relaxation. In other words, Yoga Nidra is a form of meditation in which the body and mind can truly relax on all levels.

Yoga Nidra is quite special because it is an induced mental sleep that brings the body, mind, and soul into a state of conscious rest. This state of rest is achieved through body journeys or body scans, mindfulness, and visualizations.

How does Yoga Nidra work?

A Yoga Nidra session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
First, you find a comfortable lying position on your mat, supported by pillows and covered with a blanket. Then, your attention is directed to your breath before a body scan takes place. After that, you are guided through various sensory perceptions and visualizations before being brought back to the here and now step by step.

After Yoga Nidra, you usually feel very relaxed. A 30-minute session can induce deep relaxation and rest in some people, which is equivalent to 2 to 4 hours of sleep, but by no means replaces it.
